The first group visit had a ‘blanket finish’
Pat Robinson from the Sutton and Merton branch wrote for their newsletter: On Friday, 15th September the group spent a wonderful day at Sandown Park Racecourse thanks to our Steve McNeice. He arranged with the Jockey Club for members of Blesma Photography Group to spend two days at Sandown Racecourse and compete in a photographic competition.
The official onsite photographers, John Hoy and Megan Ridgewell, gave us some useful tips on where to take the best shots.
(top l-r) Steve McNeice, Sheila Shepherd, Farmila Rai, Mike Preater, Pat Robinson, Pradip Rai and Ann Lewis shared a private hospitality box where tea, coffee and biscuits were provided – thanks to the Jockey Club.
The rain held off while we were outside taking our masterpieces.
Sheila conquered her fear and managed to get within 50 yards of a horse! Steve had the cheek to inveigle his way into the Winners’ Enclosure. He was later seen lying on the grass by the trackside to get a unique photo. The official photographer didn’t suggest either of those dubious ploys.
Although we didn’t see much racing we wore our Blesma shirts with pride and spent much of the time speaking to all and sundry about Blesma. I spoke to the winner of the last race and she was delighted that I’d be entering a photo of her horse for Blesma’s competition.
Many of those we spoke to didn’t know of Blesma before – but they certainly do now!!
The second visit was ‘All out’
The going was fair for the second bumper visit to Sandown racecourse on the 20th September. Unfortunately, we had a few non-runners who had to pull out of this event which was a shame but despite the Handicap of having fewer members attending we carried on clicking our cameras!
Racing photographer, Dan Abraham gave the group a great talk about his style of photography and what he looks for when taking photos at racing events.
Thank you, to Tessa Day from the Jockey club who looked after us so well and organised for both groups to enjoy the hospitality boxes from where it was possible to see the whole race track.
For a few of us, it was a maiden visit to a racing event and given this amazing opportunity to practice equine photography, I’m sure we’ll have a favourite amongst us
It’ll be odds on, for everyone who attended these two events on producing great images to be exhibited at Grand Military Race Day on 9th March 2018.
Let’s hope it’s a Photo Finish 🙂
Lastly, without using any more horse betting terminology, The Racing Post, Sunday wrote an article about Blesma Members attending Sandown Racecourse.
